Air Purifiers Versus Dehumidifiers for Mold
Filters are for dust. Coils and hoses are for water. Mold cares about the water.
Different machines
A dehumidifier condenses water and sends it down a hose. A purifier moves air through a filter. If your gauge reads 65%, the filter is a spectator. Start with sizing.
When a purifier earns a plug
During a small cleanup, a HEPA unit in the room can catch dust you stir up, with the door closed. For someone with allergies, a purifier in a dry bedroom is reasonable. It is not a reason to leave wet drywall in the wall.
Gadgets to skip
Ozone generators, hydroxyl foggers sold on a weekend special, and essential-oil plugs do not dry masonry. Ozone is an irritant. If the sales pitch is a smell that “destroys mold in the air,” walk out. The colony is on the joist, not floating as a cloud waiting to be scented.

These pages are homeowner education from Radon Mitigation of York, written by Dave Kessler. They are not a medical diagnosis, a species identification, or an insurance determination. Color does not tell you which mold you have. If someone in the house is sick, talk to a physician. EPA's homeowner guidance treats roughly 10 square feet as the line where many people stop DIY cleanup and call a remediation crew — sooner if sewage, HVAC, or anyone immunocompromised is involved. We are a radon and basement crew. When we are already under a York house we will tell you what we see and what we would do in our own place. We do not pretend a radon fan is a mold remedy.
