Kids, Pets, and a Damp Basement
A rug and a toy box do not make a cellar a healthy room.
Why the floor matters
Kids and dogs live in the bottom three feet, which is exactly where basement carpet stays cool and damp. A playroom installed over a finished wall we later open is a story I have heard more than once in Spring Garden and East York. If you can smell it at the stairs, they can smell it on the rug.
Pets are not a test kit
A dog scratching is not a mold meter. It is a reason to look, because you were going to ignore the smell. Litter boxes and food bowls also add moisture and food for pests. See can mold affect pets and still call a vet for the animal, not a radon tech.
The bar before the room goes back into service
No visible growth, no musty odor after the house has been closed up, humidity held in range for a couple of weeks, and hard flooring you can wipe. Then move people and animals back. Not the weekend of the leak.
Questions people also ask
+Is a dehumidifier enough for a nursery downstairs?
+Can cats track spores upstairs?
These pages are homeowner education from Radon Mitigation of York, written by Dave Kessler. They are not a medical diagnosis, a species identification, or an insurance determination. Color does not tell you which mold you have. If someone in the house is sick, talk to a physician. EPA's homeowner guidance treats roughly 10 square feet as the line where many people stop DIY cleanup and call a remediation crew — sooner if sewage, HVAC, or anyone immunocompromised is involved. We are a radon and basement crew. When we are already under a York house we will tell you what we see and what we would do in our own place. We do not pretend a radon fan is a mold remedy.
