Basement Mold in York, PA
The basement is the mold room in this county. Not because of a curse. Because it is cool, below grade, and full of storage.
The house we keep walking into
Block or stone, a sump in the corner, the water heater sweating in July, and a sofa someone is proud of. That is East York, North York, Spring Garden, and plenty of West York ranches. Downtown is more likely an unfinished stone cellar with a smell that climbs the stairs. Causes are listed in what causes mold.
A sane order of work
- Gutters, grading, window wells.
- Stop any plumbing drip.
- Gauge and dehumidifier on a hose.
- Throw out wet pad, wet drywall, wet boxes.
- Clean what is hard and still sound.
- Only then talk about paint, carpet, or a guest room.
Use the checklist so you do not skip the spout and buy the paint.
Finished rooms
If the room is already finished and smells anyway, read mold behind drywall before you add another layer. Opening one wet bay is cheaper than fogging the ceiling.
Where radon fits
We are under these basements for mitigation installs. Tell us about damp when you book. We will not pretend the fan is your drying plan, and we will not leave a sump lid off so a hose has a place to drip.

These pages are homeowner education from Radon Mitigation of York, written by Dave Kessler. They are not a medical diagnosis, a species identification, or an insurance determination. Color does not tell you which mold you have. If someone in the house is sick, talk to a physician. EPA's homeowner guidance treats roughly 10 square feet as the line where many people stop DIY cleanup and call a remediation crew — sooner if sewage, HVAC, or anyone immunocompromised is involved. We are a radon and basement crew. When we are already under a York house we will tell you what we see and what we would do in our own place. We do not pretend a radon fan is a mold remedy.
