Painting Over Basement Mold
If the can says it kills mold and the wall is still damp, the can is marketing.
What paint can do
On a dry, cleaned masonry wall, a masonry coating can slow vapor and make the room easier to live with. On paper-faced drywall that already grew mold, paint is a costume. The paper stays in the wall. Encapsulant products used by remediators are for specific clean surfaces, not a substitute for removing crumbled gypsum.
The blister test
If last year’s paint is flaking at the bottom foot, the wall is moving water or salt. More paint adds a thicker chip. Find out whether you have condensation or a leak before you buy another gallon. The foil test is on the condensation guide.
A sequence that does not embarrass you later
Dry, clean, wait through a rainy or humid week, then paint. If you are listing the house, photos of the dry week beat a fresh smell of primer. Selling is when cover-ups get expensive.

These pages are homeowner education from Radon Mitigation of York, written by Dave Kessler. They are not a medical diagnosis, a species identification, or an insurance determination. Color does not tell you which mold you have. If someone in the house is sick, talk to a physician. EPA's homeowner guidance treats roughly 10 square feet as the line where many people stop DIY cleanup and call a remediation crew — sooner if sewage, HVAC, or anyone immunocompromised is involved. We are a radon and basement crew. When we are already under a York house we will tell you what we see and what we would do in our own place. We do not pretend a radon fan is a mold remedy.
