Can I Remove Mold Myself?
A shower ceiling is not the same job as a basement full of wet drywall.
Why this question keeps coming up
People either panic and hire a hazmat theater, or they scrub a whole basement in flip-flops. The middle is where most York bathrooms and small cellar spots belong.
What it looks like in York County
A caulk line in a West York bath is a Saturday. A wall of finished basement in Spring Garden is not. If you open the wall and the bay is worse than you thought, stop and reassess instead of proving a point.
What to do
- Protect your eyes, skin, and lungs.
- Work damp so you are not launching dust.
- Bag debris.
- Dry until a meter agrees.
What makes it worse
- Mix bleach and ammonia.
- Use a shop vac with no HEPA filter as a spore cannon.
- Send kids in to “help wipe.”
Materials matter: bleach and vinegar.

These pages are homeowner education from Radon Mitigation of York, written by Dave Kessler. They are not a medical diagnosis, a species identification, or an insurance determination. Color does not tell you which mold you have. If someone in the house is sick, talk to a physician. EPA's homeowner guidance treats roughly 10 square feet as the line where many people stop DIY cleanup and call a remediation crew — sooner if sewage, HVAC, or anyone immunocompromised is involved. We are a radon and basement crew. When we are already under a York house we will tell you what we see and what we would do in our own place. We do not pretend a radon fan is a mold remedy.
