Is Black Mold Dangerous?
Dangerous is the wrong first word. Wet is the right one.
Why this question keeps coming up
The phrase took over search results, so every spot in a shower gets the same panic as a soaked wall cavity. Homeowners then buy a test kit instead of a dehumidifier.
What it looks like in York County
In York cellars the dark specks on block are often ordinary mold on dust, or sometimes just dirt. The stone rowhomes downtown grow dark patches on cold walls every humid August. The response is the same as for any other color.
What to do
- Stop the moisture before you name the species.
- Clean small areas on hard surfaces or remove porous material.
- Keep kids and pets out of the work area.
- Call a doctor for symptoms, not a photo app.
What makes it worse
- Identify “toxic mold” with a flashlight.
- Fog the house and sleep there the same night.
- Ignore a large area because it is not black.

These pages are homeowner education from Radon Mitigation of York, written by Dave Kessler. They are not a medical diagnosis, a species identification, or an insurance determination. Color does not tell you which mold you have. If someone in the house is sick, talk to a physician. EPA's homeowner guidance treats roughly 10 square feet as the line where many people stop DIY cleanup and call a remediation crew — sooner if sewage, HVAC, or anyone immunocompromised is involved. We are a radon and basement crew. When we are already under a York house we will tell you what we see and what we would do in our own place. We do not pretend a radon fan is a mold remedy.
