Why Mold Comes Back After You Clean It
Cleaning is step two. Step one is why it was wet.
The three reruns I see
- Same leak. A slow trap under a vanity, a cracked well, a washer hose.
- Same humidity. Dehumidifier unplugged, or windows opened every humid afternoon. See summer humidity.
- Same cold wall. Condensation on block that was scrubbed and left in a 68% cellar.
How to tell the cleaning worked
The spot does not ghost back after two humid weeks, the meter reads dry, and the smell is gone with the dehumidifier cycling normally rather than roaring nonstop. If you need the bleach bottle on a schedule, you do not have a cleaning problem.
Stop repeating the ritual
Read what actually works on which materials, fix the cause, and only then decide what to throw away. A monthly spray is a hobby.

These pages are homeowner education from Radon Mitigation of York, written by Dave Kessler. They are not a medical diagnosis, a species identification, or an insurance determination. Color does not tell you which mold you have. If someone in the house is sick, talk to a physician. EPA's homeowner guidance treats roughly 10 square feet as the line where many people stop DIY cleanup and call a remediation crew — sooner if sewage, HVAC, or anyone immunocompromised is involved. We are a radon and basement crew. When we are already under a York house we will tell you what we see and what we would do in our own place. We do not pretend a radon fan is a mold remedy.
